Добавлен 1 окт 2019
History Pop dives into the histories that inform pop culture. Deep inside the histories depicted in our favorite shows, games, and movies are memories that we’ve created for ourselves.
History Pop is part of the first-ever pilot series launched by Complexly, the production company behind RUclips channels like Crash Course, SciShow, PBS Eons, and Journey to the Microcosmos.
Between October 15 and 31st, 2019, we will post 3 pilot episodes to this channel to gage what you all think of it. Leave your thoughts in the comments section and help us decide whether to keep making this show!

How Assassin's Creed Plays With The Past
Просмотров 6 тыс.4 года назад
Assassin’s Creed not only fills its games with exciting adventure but also robust and well researched historical settings. As with so much historically situated pop culture, looking at where the game chooses to adhere to the historical record - and where it doesn’t - can often tell us as much about where we are now as it can about the past. History Pop is part of Complexly’s first ever pilot se...
How Chernobyl Hid A History Lesson Behind An Unfortunate Cow
Просмотров 20 тыс.4 года назад
The Chernobyl miniseries has been widely praised for its historical accuracy and the way many different parts of the production come together to create a story that is both compelling and mindful of the people who lived these events. The show is so layered, in fact, that tucked into a short scene at the beginning of the show's 4th episode, a couple lines of dialogue contain another history less...
Did the people of Deadwood really swear that much?
Просмотров 224 тыс.4 года назад
One of the most discussed aspects of the TV show Deadwood is the language the show used, in particular the swear words. But the show is based on a real place and real people, so: did they really swear that much? History Pop is part of Complexly's first ever pilot season! Check out the other two shows in this launch, Stories Retold & Hashed Out! ruclips.net/user/storiesretold ruclips.net/user/ha...
Well Farken ell , that was pretty educational
One might assert that Al was a swear engine.
One thing American screenwriters can't do is convincing period swearing. Never enough bibical references, way too many motherfuckers, and too much swearing around women. It comes out sounding like a parody of a group of edgy 14 years olds in 2009, hanging around outside the 7-Eleven. And it adds nothing, not humour, not impact, just jarring anachronism.
Roman Moronie has entered the chat...
I tried to watch Deadwood, and the constant swearing reminds me of that kid in junior high who just discovered how much fun it is to use "bad words." It's uncreative, intrusive, excessive, and distracting. Also, I didn't hear any "flowery" or "elevated" language in what I watched, neither in Deadwood or your little video here. Rewriting Swearingen's dialogue was the only thing of merit, and yes, that would have been more accurate to the time and better overall. The violence against women was also something I had a problem with in Deadwood. As for your video, I don't understand why you go on about Native American issues so much. You almost certainly aren't from there, have no connection to the land, and have no authority to speak for the indigenous inhabitants or judge the dead. Yeah, I get it, you're senstive and all that. It's just slacktivism, and it's goddamned sickening.
Great vid!
The fuckedity-fuck-fucks of the first Deadwood episode immediately made me feel uncertain if the show would actually show "The real Wild West" that I had been yearning for in a show. I then researched the word "fuck" and realized it was older than I thought, but still that part of the language in the show felt a bit artificial for me. Nevertheless, I grew accustomed to it but I don't think it would have taken anything away from the experience if they had chosen a more natural way of speaking according to the time period.
Lots of Brits there, so Yes we do it all the time.😄👍🇬🇧
Agree with the comments - very informative, articule, well produced, and yes, Nick has a great speaking voice. Loved his last quote of Swearingen...
Cocksuckers.
Fuck yeah…
As a fan of the show and of the history behind it, this was a fascinating dive into the language. Really enjoyed this and learned a lot.
No they it was all hugs and kisses. Unbelievable
VERY REALISTIC OF THE TIME!!!
Al getting bj’s while verbally contemplating strategy dealing with his adversaries made me laugh every single time. Loved the show despite its poor ending.
This is the coolest video/topic, thanks!!! I wish creator stayed more authentic with the cuss words. Before this video family and I have been arguing weather the overuse of those types of words in those days were authentic or not. Now I know. They seemed to do such a good job with other aspects I wish they were more authentic in the cuss words too so you’d fully feel like you stepped into history when you turned on the show
I wish they would have done historical accurate swearing.
I am validated as well as LMAO because the style in which you are doing this narration is exactly how I have done things from time to time to make a point, and I have been known to make long complex sentences in paragraphs which contain only two, particularly noted upon by those who apparantly have done no classical reading withal.
Yeah, but if there were no cussing or swearing would anyone notice. Most of the time the language seems forced.
It's all in the name: Al Swearin'again!
Sounded like Shakespeare to me.
A bunch of drunk men in a mining camp? OF COURSE they swore that much!
Now see here! Such language!!
Excellent. Miss the show and wish they hadn’t terminated it so soon because of hubris and issues.
Loved Deadwood, best western show ever. But if they reduced the F bombs by 50% in the script there’d still be 200% more F bombs than they needed.
absofuckinglutely
I live in Montana. Deadwood sounds like a typical Saturday night in a Missoula bar.
This was way to f'ing erudite.
Cocksuckers
Fuk yeah they did god damn it u cunt...
I have quite literally broke out laughing. 😂😂😂
I'm still mad as hell Deadwood got cancelled.
I love Deadwood, I’ve been there and it’s fucking amazing you cocksuckers. 😊
You killed it man. As a foul mouthed military and fire department officer you got this down. Haha.
Ahh ... Fanny bottom! 😳
If you took the cussing out of Deadwood, it would be a silent movie.
What's with all the dithering on the video clips?
Hoople head is my favorite.
My wife and I are rewatching deadwood. Lol we talk to each other in deadwood-ese. We find it hilarious.
I could live without the woketardism.
Kind of like constantly casting Englishmen as Romans. The English accent is acceptable to American ears as the accent of empire
What I noticed was that they were way too clean and pressed ti be real, Ckean hands and faces, ckothes not slept in and freshly washed... every week??:!
This is one of the main reasons I turn off period tv which doesn't reflect language of the time. All of the modern day swear words you don't want your kids hearing from their beds is simply gratuitous spackle. The writers could have gained respect by using the language of the day. I was raised around military, back woods lumberjacks, loggers, truckers, mechanics, cowboys, fishermen, etc. I spent plenty of time in old bars located in the California mountains listening to family shoot a game of pool & wrap up the day with their work buddies. Kids have ears and while we may have heard a crap, shit or damn, the language in this show was unheard of. Sad when stories waste our time on useless language and sex filler.
I hated deadwood for all the use of the modern curse words.
i thought that they all talked like yosemite sam.
When the show began to air, I didn't watch it because I found the language to be too distracting and felt it was unrealistic. I eventually caved in and really enjoyed the show. Not until now when I watched this that I understand the importance of updating the language to 'current day' swearing to give the scenes the same impact they would have had back then with what we would now consider to be milder language. Fucken aye.
bloody hopple heads
As a historian I can tell you : NO, they did not swear a lot back then. In fact, they swore much less than we do today. The profuse profanity in Deadwood was not historically accurate. That said, it was still very good entertainment.
Having studied a bit of Shakespeare in college...the writing in so many places reflected that great dramatist...it stunned me...masterwork, clearly...
i had heard this was a good show, so I tried watching it, but had to turn it off because of the excessive swearing.
